Who should attend IREL?
IREL is open to all educators in any classroom, school, or community setting. This includes teachers, teacher assistants, librarians, learning specialists, school leaders, coaches, and administrators. Although IREL focuses on reading and writing in the humanities, teachers of all subject areas are invited to attend. We have had math, social studies, and science teachers attend!
What is the format of IREL?
While each IREL institute looks a little different, key features include:
- Expert facilitation led by founders, Dr. Sonja Cherry-Paul and Tricia Ebarvia
- Small group opportunities for discussion and reflection led by expert educator-facilitators
- Combination of high quality content and practical strategies rooted in antiracist scholarship
- Special topics designed to meet the current and changing landscape of education
- Featured guests through keynotes, author talks, and/or panel discussions
Are IREL sessions recorded?
No. To preserve the privacy and scholarship of all involved, IREL sessions are not recorded.
Where is IREL held?
Our in-person summer institutes have been held at the University of New Hampshire, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Library in Washington, D.C., and Boston University. We also hold special IREL institutes online. Please see our website under “Upcoming Sessions” for the latest information.
How will this institute meet the needs of educators of color?
As a Black woman (Sonja) and Asian American woman (Tricia), we understand what it is like when professional development experiences do not differentiate for the particular needs or honor the voices and experiences of educators of color. During each IREL experience, we take special care and consideration for educators of color to reflect and engage in learning, often through facilitated racial affinity spaces.
How much does IREL cost?
Equity and access are the foundation of this institute, and with that in mind, our goal is to keep registration costs as affordable as possible for educators while also ensuring that our team of facilitators is also compensated for their time and talent.
NOTE: For the online 2025 IREL experience, participants will have the following registration options:
- July 9 only – Keynote and access to all four breakout sessions – $150
- July 9 and 10 – This option includes a half-day follow-up workshop focused on reflection and action planning – $200
Payment may be made via credit card or purchase order. If using a purchase order, please contact SonjaAndTricia@TheIREL.org.
How is IREL funded?
IREL is funded through a combination of registration costs and the generous contributions of host organizations, such as the D.C. Public Library Foundation (when held in-person). 100% of the registration costs are used to compensate facilitators and staff.
How can I register?
Registration is available on our website once available. Space may be limited. Consider bringing a group from your school/district!
